Life as a cartoon

Some days, being a manager makes me feel like Papa Smurf.

Because face it, the Smurfs as a species were whiny little bitches.  Or at least, that's what I remember about 'em.

Dark Humour

Must be in a bit of a dark place this morning.  I was slightly horrified, and then amused at my own response when I saw the title of an email from my District Manager today.  It was titled "Execution Reminder" and my first thought was about a violent and bloody end for another manager or wayward store associate.

The flipside

Trying to find a way to describe my disappointment about needing to work tomorrow, my day off, with out being whiny or an asshole.  I'm already holding down the fort on my own on the Fourth.  All my full timers get the day off.  Now a family tragedy for one of my salesmen leaves him unable to work tomorrow, and me obligated to cover his shift.

In theory, tomorrow is an early pay day.  The total amount will factor heavily on when I go to get a new car.  I've got the payments figured out based on my non-managerial earnings, and a certain (goal) down payment.  If this paycheck is enough to put me over into that ideal range... I'm pulling the trigger this weekend.

Using my super powers for good...

Well, that was cool. Because i'm a manager, i got to take care of a customer even though it went against corporate policy.

Expensive Purchases

I got this email from my girlfriend...

We've just decided that everything that is expensive, ends in "i" or "a"

Prada
Gucci
Fendi
Gabbana
Pucci

And they're mostly Italian.

Hey wait!  I fit into those guidelines, too.  ;)

Her last name ends in 'a' and she's part italian... Funny, and scary.

Capital T and Capital M

I've jumped up in rank. No longer just a sales associate, I'll be a manager come Sunday. I'm not working for The Man, I am The Man. But I'm not keeping anybody down. Oddly, it'll be almost 9 months to the day, since I started working for Canine* Camera.

It feels right, and quite a bit scary. The pay jump is worth the extra effort. It'll slow down school a bit further but honestly, is anybody surprised by that at this point in my academic career?

I'm inheriting a decent if not well run store. Fairly full of battle weary veterans. Everybody has room for improvement, but nobody sucks. Personally I plan on trying to win everybody over by doing my shit as well I can. Then we'll see about changes.

*Not their real name. Not sure I want them to find me and my blog by googling themselves. If you want a hint, think of a wild member of the canine family. The parent company is Cracker Camera. Think round and salty, or that old song... "Putting on the Cracker"

We're going to end up far from here

I was looking at this article, http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/007963.html about how to really define affordable housing.  It seems when housing AND travel are put together, there's a completely different picture of how affordable the suburbs really are.  It sounds like a no-brainer, but apparently we tend to underestimate how important the travel part of our budget is.

They break it down in a little chart/map thingy.  http://htaindex.cnt.org/map_tool And it looks like around here, once transportation is factored in, the only affordable places to live are Fermi Lab and maybe that convent over in Lisle.

It's not just hip to live in the city... it's affordable-ish.
