We're going to end up far from here
I was looking at this article, http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/007963.html about how to really define affordable housing. It seems when housing AND travel are put together, there's a completely different picture of how affordable the suburbs really are. It sounds like a no-brainer, but apparently we tend to underestimate how important the travel part of our budget is.
They break it down in a little chart/map thingy. http://htaindex.cnt.org/map_tool And it looks like around here, once transportation is factored in, the only affordable places to live are Fermi Lab and maybe that convent over in Lisle.
It's not just hip to live in the city... it's affordable-ish.
