what an odd day weather wise... a half hour of beating rain
followed by an hour or two of sunshine. i've spent the day
organizing pictures and renaming ones not named. how
tedious. i need to get better about this. otherwise,
i've done little besides checking to make sure the sump pump is
working. methinks it's time to swap pumps and repair the
switch again. that seems to be a three year rotation.
Michelle and Matt and Sunti took me out for dinner yesterday and
then us adults went to see Shrek 2 after Sunti went to bed.
Thanks, that was a nice birthday treat.
Spent the time between dinner and the movie installing anti-virus
software on michelle's computer. Such a stupid thing to
overlook and ignore, no wonder she was having problems.
Hit the birthday yesterday. Heather came over to help bake a
cake, then we went back to her house where she cooked for me. Some
movies and cuddling... all in all, not a bad birthday. Posted by BG on 5/30/04; 11:13:02

Kentucky is famous for its bourbon whiskey, but even most
Kentuckians don't know that bourbon is the invention of a Baptist
minister. In Kentucky's late 18th Century frontier days, cash was
scarce. Many people conducted business via barter, including
supporting their churches. The local minister would receive far
more tithes in grain than he could ever eat or resell, so most ran
distilleries. In what was then called Bourbon County (and is now
Scott County), Baptist minister and notorious cheapskate Elijah
Craig was no exception. As the story goes, Craig decided to burn
out the inside of the oak barrels he aged his whiskey in so he
could get one more use out of them. Turns out people liked the
flavor imparted by Craig's charred oak more than the straight,
regular-oak aged whiskey, and thus bourbon whiskey was born. The
sad irony of all this is that Baptists became teetotalers and
Scott County went dry.
While stolidly Baptist Scott County is now dry as a bone, local
legend has it that several casks of Elijah Craig's original
bourbon were placed inside the columns of the administration
building of the equally Baptist Georgetown College. The legend
never fails to lure guillible frat boys into trying to crack those
columns open about once a decade.
I'd heard
that IBM is mostly interested in becoming a consulting company
pushing computer solutions... not in desktops or piddly stuff like
that, mostly mainframes, servers and business machines with
their software solutions on 'em. This Linux strategy
kinda plays to that rumor.. Big business, is big
business. let's all get a slice.
I wonder if the poor little indian girl who helped me with mom's
broken computer will be flogged for not being able to resolve my
problem with out having to send a new hard drive. She had to get her
boss on the line a couple times once she agreed with me that the
harddrive was kaput. He had me try a few more things. He didn't
sound too happy, and but then, he's an indian at work in a service
industry. Gasp, a whole replacement drive! Maybe next time
they should use a drive that lasts longer than 10 days. 24 hour
computer technical service hotline can't be a fun job. Posted by BG on 5/20/04; 9:08:09 PM
at a most grossly ornate McD's waiting for the girl to finish
work... faux marble, paintings, jazz, private booths. how
odd. Posted by BG on 5/19/04; 3:46:03 PM
Oh yeah, got tickets for Heather and I to see Glen Phillips (former 'Toad
the Wet Sprocket' band member) tonight! He's gonna be at the
Black Orchid
in Pipers Alley in Chicago. My most favorite performer by
far. Recently downloaded a performance
(1+GB!) of his with Nickel
Creek from Archive.Org. They
took their oncore onto the street because the club was closing!
What a nice wake up call I got this morning.
(approximately... 10 - 15 minutes ago) The CC of IC2004
decided I needed to get up. Also, they apparently don't want
me to fall asleep between now and IC, because: oh yeah, they
also want me to be the IS Team Leader.
Question: How do I get to Germany, and how do I pay for
living expenses in Germany, when I only have $300?
This really random castle in Kentucky that I took pictures of
during the Lexington YES Conference Bourbon Trail Tour burned
down. I guess Omar really can't be trusted with fireworks.
So, Scottie wasted a tonne of my time today. He's been
cajooling me into applying for the CC of IC 2004. My god was that
application a killer. But I think even though I have to leave
for a few days during preconference to go to Lisa's wedding, I still
think I have enough experience and enthusiasm to be a worth
while addition to the team. A big big thanks to Chris White
for filling out a reference for me so quickly. He had it done
and faxed before I even started the application.
We'll see what happens, but I may be off to Germany for the
summer!
I ain't got 'em obviously. Dad and I are driving in the rain to
the CompUSA opening in Geneva in hopes of a free
computer... Posted by BG on 5/7/04; 5:26:26 AM
What's wrong with the idea that, to stop the annoying re-writes,
I have to make a 'super' resume that has ALL my experience,
education, skillz, objectives. Then I can just pick and choose the
appropriate entries and delete the rest. To some, this sounds like a
wonderful and adaptive idea. To me, it sounds like I'm sending out
too many resumes. Posted by BG on 5/6/04; 9:28:03 PM
It's just too hot in my work area to accomplish anything. So I've
moved outside. (Hooray for laptops and wireless networking! *Listens
for the Amens*)
It smells just like all my childhood memories
of St. Louis out here. It's that slightly hot muggy getting ready to
rain smell. I love it.
I had such a hard time getting settled
down and doing anything. Being out here, I've actually gotten
started on what I set as my goal for the day. Amazing. Now I just
have to finish it. Posted by BG on 5/6/04; 5:00:05 PM
Sound waves are crashing on my house. With the windows open i can
hear the highschool pep rallies and sporting events about a mile
away. And Mike, I hate
to say it, but they blow your sound system away. I think it's f($)
not f(desire to do sound loud) they probably don't want it loud as
badly as you do, but they can pay for it. (how hard is it to stick a
loud sound system on the stadium of a $62M high school? (about
halfway down - Neuqua Valley in Naperville))
Anyway, had
coffee with Lisa this afternoon. Glad to see her. She's so far away
in Atlanta flying for Coke. But she flies GIV's and GV's and that's just
damn cool. Her wedding is coming up, and is one of the main reasons
i'm not applying for IC in
germany. (It's too few days before the conference right smack in
pre-con.)
(I'm just full of side notes today)
Heather
seems a bit bummed lately. Her job is getting to her. I hope the
giraffe she's been coveting and some lottery tickets will cheer her
up.
Anyway, back to my big empty house. The parents abandoned
me for an engagement party in St. Louis. And since dad has the week
off (he has something like 4 weeks of vacation to use up by July)
they decided to stay a bit. Party at my house? Posted by BG on 5/3/04; 4:36:05 PM
