community

The degree in the adult program at DePaul is largely self directed. To ensure quality they require each student design their degree with the influence of a faculty advisor and a professional advisor. The faculty advisor ensures academic standards and graduation requirements are met. The professional advisor ensures that the degree has value in the 'real' world.

During the year(s) the student is working on the degree the involvement of the professional can be very minimal or in an ideal world they become something of a mentor. Somebody who is personally invested in the success of the student, willing to share their expertise, warn of potential pitfalls, be a champion for the student and maybe... just maybe help the student find a job during the degree or after graduation.

Though the university does have a large database of potential professional advisors, they encourage you to find your own. My search was rather lame at the start. In fact, it was so lame, it didn't exist. But now... it's just brimming with potential.

I posted a message to one of the meetings industry's message boards. In a matter of hours, I had a fair number of leads and plenty of supportive replies. I'm not totally suprised. The hospitality industry has always treated me well, with few notable exceptions.

This is the power of community fueled by the internet. Look after your own and leave the world better than how you found it. AIESEC does it, nomadlifers do it, and so do meetings professionals...

Clouds

I can see a cloud which looks like the woman on the prow of a wooden ship.
She just helped me illustrate my learning style.

27

i'd love to be rolling up to milwaukee for some grade 'A' stupidness... but dad is still pretty sick, and i shouldn't wander too far when he's not being watched...

so for what seems like the fourth time in at least as many years, i'll be making my own birthday cake, lunch and dinner...

i'll have to make an escape and celebrate sometime soon.

all ripple - no splash

flickr just made their big interface change ( read thomas hawk's review of the changes )

I think i was using it as it happened... never even noticed the change happen... no lag, no glitch, just different all of a sudden.

i'm impressed. both with the new feel, and the changeover.

personally that's what i strive for at conferences. change dealt with imperceptively. no muss, no fuss... just improvement. there is no 'i', no ''look at me!'', all ripple - no splash

can you internalize your ego that much?

roundup

it's been cold and rainy for a few days here. the impact on work is dramatic... rainy == few outdoor sports scores to report. In the last three days i've seen a total of 3 legitimate phone calls come in.

in theory i should be kicking but on homework as a result. but alas, the will escapes me. i've been staring at the screen and not doing either of two papers as a result. but i am getting closer, some minimal forward progress has been made today.

So a roundup of life over here...

Driving in to work today, I saw a raccoon trotting down a gutter. finding it unusual to see one of these guys out during the day i circled back to get a closer look. by the time i had turned around, he had reached his destination - the grate in the curb allowing water (and raccoon) access to the sewer system. i figure when it's not flooding, it's probably a decent way to cross the street.

On campus at COD the student paper printed the danish cartoons lampooning islam and the prophet muhammed. the feature was an extension of a presentation made on campus. It was an attempt to expose the campus to the controversy and give opposing sides a chance to publicly explain their position. the editorial staff felt that printing the cartoons was essential to discussing them. However, few students got to see the feature. As the paper was distributed a group of students took it upon themselves to collect all the issues and destroy them.

Wonder what's gonna happen next...

Still waiting on word about the internship. Got notice recently that they were still interviewing people, but that I was still in the running for the job.

heather's sister anne had her birthday party on cinco de mayo... plenty of silly princess drama and drunkeness. i had a good time, and gained a bunch of points for helping take care of anne and her friend jori as they puked and whined.

glen phillips is coming to town next week. I'm going to the show as celebration of the semester ending at COD.

being enrolled in two schools at one time is no joke. especially when one is on semesters and the other is on quarters. I'm a student at both College of DuPage and DePaul University. End of semester projects, papers and finals at COD are stealing time from studying for my class at DePaul. But finals are next week, and all excuses will be thusly be eliminated.

My mother is spending her Mother's Day weekend in indy watching my neice while my father, sister and brother in law rip up slate tile and asbestos filled lineoleum. A new wood floor will be installed in the coming weeks.

Oh btw mike, almost all linoleum made before the regulation in the mid-80's contained asbestos or was glued down by an asbestos based glue. so all that stuff we pulled up at the beach house for the Kubiks was almost certainly lethal. But then, you also got to pull the asbestos shingles off of the other beach house too. If you weren't planning on dying a young rockstar death at 27, you're double screwed.

My favorite barmaid

My favorite bar up at school,
Has a barmaid who is pretty cool.

But i'm mad, she laughed when i fell off my stool!

far out thinking

Here's an interesting article about how to warn future civilizations of the dangers of our nuclear waste dumps. These places will be dangerous for thousdands of years. There is no guarantee than any language alive today, will be intelligible that far in the future. Another interesting idea is not marking the site at all. Just leaving hidden clues that something is dangerous in the area discernable only to those doing intelligent searches.
